Oak Ridge history and the nuclear legacy
80 years of nuclear science and technology
More than 80 years ago, the Manhattan Project transformed a rural area of East Tennessee into the city of Oak Ridge. Thousands of workers came together in a secret wartime effort that helped bring World War II to an end and established the region as a center for nuclear science and technology.
The facilities, expertise and spirit of innovation developed during that time continue to shape Roane County and the surrounding region. Today, national laboratories, security facilities, energy providers and private companies build on that legacy, advancing research, national security, nuclear energy and new opportunities for future generations.
